Cost-Benefit Analysis

When you get stuck on a decision, take a piece of paper and draw a line down the center from top to bottom.  At the top of the left side write “Costs/Disadvantages” and at the top of the right “Benefits/Advantages”.  Then write all the “costs” you can think of if you choose to do or think something and then all the “benefits” if you choose to do/think it.  Weigh them out against each other and see if doing or thinking it is worth it.

Decision: Go to school at night to get into nursing school (desired career)
  • It will be challenging to work during the day and go to school at night.
  • I will have to give up going out as much for at least a while.
  • It will cost $2,000 for tuition/books--I'll have to take a student loan.
  • I won't be able to spend as much money on my vacation this year.
  • I really like nursing and want to get into it. Doing that would be so much better than remaining a waiter.
  • Nursing will pay much more, in the long run, and I will be more financially secure.
  • I think I would feel better about myself if I were making progress out of restaurant work into a career that really means something to me.  My mood would improve.
  • Going to school at night moves me forward.
